Tis the season

Once more the Morel mushroom season is upon us! In my opinion the Morel is the best tasting of all wild mushrooms. It’s mild nutty flavor makes it compatable with all other foods, damn good with steak!

The season here brings out hundreds of “hunters”. The only problem is having an area to hunt them.In our area alone, last week there were dozens of calls to the local Sheriff’s office of tresspassers. No,I wasn’t one of them, but my son was.he was caught!Hell yea he was told by his mother and I both not to be hunting shrooms where he was but you know how that goes with young people. His bond was set at $107.00 and the fine will be greater when he goes to court to face his charges.

Many people can’t understand why him and others would take the chance of paying the high cost of bonds and fines. As the song goes “money, money, money, moneyyyyyy”.yes the greed for the American dollar. The hunters can sell their shrooms anywhere from $10.00 to $50.00 per pound! In good hunting teritory (usually places you are not allowed to hunt) an average days hunt could net you anywhere between$500.00 to $1,000.00 clear profit (if you don’t have to share the rewards with the county law enforcement agencies).

The bad part about this whole thing is with the economy the way it is plus the unemployment the way it is,there is a lot more competition out there. And believe me some competitors are mean and not beyond fighting over the best teritory. I look for things to get worse over the next couple of years with possible killing. The legal (and illegal) havesting and selling is quickly becoming a better source of tax free income than the illegal drug trade.

Oh,I never put up my son’s bond, that was his problem not mine.he was back out stomping the woods the very next day, only on legal ground .Seems he might have learned a lesson,,,,,,Neh prob not.
